Visual Arts
The arts provide an important way for students to learn about their world and communicate their thoughts and emotions. Our Art program emphasizes the exploration of children’s artistic process and the development of their creative abilities.
Take a walk down our hallways and you’ll notice that our West 10th Street campus is adorned with student artwork. By having their work consistently displayed in this way, student artists are able to both draw inspiration from and celebrate one another, building their confidence as artists and creative thinkers.
Lower School Art (Kindergarten - 5th Grade)
The Lower School art curriculum is designed to be an exciting and discovery-rich experience. Students learn to channel their imaginations while building their fine motor skills and observational powers through exploring media such as clay, paint, charcoal pencil, and textiles. For many young students, art making is both a visual and a verbal process. Once a drawing, painting or clay sculpture is finished, students become effusive storytellers who enjoy explaining their work.
Upper School Art (6th-8th Grade)
The Upper School art curriculum meets the growing interests and abilities of pre-adolescents with projects that develop their observational and manipulative skills as well as their capacity to think symbolically and metaphorically. In addition to hands-on exploration and practice, students are introduced to artists from other time periods and cultures, helping them to connect their own work to a larger artistic legacy.
